Welcome To Unovia's Fire Red Switch Kanto Playthrough!
Backstory:
I have not played Gen 3 Kanto for many years. In 2019, I lost the original carts in a house flood. With the games being ported over to the Switch, I wondered whether I would get Fire Red for the Switch, and now I have done so.

Rules:
This is to be a Standard Playthrough. In addition, if I can catch as many Pokemon as I can, I will, meaning this is a "Professor Oak" style adventure. I already have my Team planned out, though I will not reveal Team members until they come up.

I can only use the same number of Pokemon as the Gym Leader. Rematches are allowed as necessary.

I plan to go through the entire game, including the Sevii Islands.

I will not be able to get the Trade Evos (Alakazam, Gengar, Machamp, Golem, Politoed, Steelix, Kingdra, Porygon2) nor the version exclusives for Leaf Green.

Can I beat Pokemon Fire Red on the Nintendo Switch? There is only one way to find out! Join me on this quest, won't you?

Welcome To Kanto!
Starting out, I named myself Daniel (my real name) and my rival Gary. I have always associated his character as Gary (child of the anime). Still in my room, I collected the Potion from the PC. Healing items are important. Then I made my way downstairs, where Mom told me that Professor Oak was looking for me.

Leaving my house, I went to Professor Oak's Lab, only to find out he was not there. Must have been doing research. I left to go find him, and was about to step in the tall grass, only to have Professor Oak show up and escort me to the Lab.

Gary was anxious to get his First Pokemon, though Professor Oak let me pick first.

In the next Log, we will get our First Pokemon. Until the next time, we will see you!

Our First Pokemon
Standing at the table, I was not sure which Pokemon I wanted. I am not really a fan of Squirtle, so that was eliminated. Sorry to the Squirtle fans! That left me with Bulbasaur and Charmander.

As I was doing a final check before officially starting this Playthrough, I thought about playing like Origins Red, since his whole Team can be gotten in Fire Red. He started with Charmander. That made a valid case.

However, I like Bulbasaur best in a Kanto Playthrough, so I decided to go with Bulbasaur.

Gary went with Charmander, and we promptly battled. I came out on top, winning the battle against Gary. Bulbasaur grew to Level 6. I saved on the outskirts of Town after healing with Mom.

In the next Log, we will run an errand for Professor Oak. Until the next time, we will see you!

Out of the three Kanto Starters, which is your favorite of the:
1) Base Forms?
2) Middle Forms?
3) Final Forms?
I like:
The Bulbasaur line is my favorite of the three. Charmander and Charizard are cool, though Charmeleon feels awkward. Squirtle is cute, Blastoise is tough, but Wartortle feels awkward again.

Those middle stages of the three are all kinda odd. Ivysaur makes the most sense.

With Bulbasaur as my Starter, I head to Viridian City to pick up a package for Professor Oak. Along the way, I got a Potion from a representative of the Poke Mart.

Viridian City
I can't buy anything until I get Oak's package, so I do that, then go back home. Can't do anything in the city right now.

Pallet Town
Turns out, the package had Pokedexes and Poke Balls. It's time to go catch some Pokemon! Gary tries to push us out of the way, but we continue onward. I also get a Town Map from Daisy.

In the next Log, we will explore Route 1. Until the next time, we will see you!

Route 1
Kanto's Route 1 has to be the most famous Route in all of Pokemon, right? It's the one that a lot of Players began on.

Here, I put my 5 Poke balls to use, capturing a Ratatta and a Pidgey. I took some time to level them and Bulbasaur up to Level 7. The first Rival fight (outside the Lab) is coming soon.

From there, I made my way into Viridian City. In the next Log, we will talk about Viridian City. Until the next time, we will see you!

Viridian City
The first major City in the game doesn't have much to offer right now. I decided to heal, then make my way onto Route 22 for the Rival fight. We will do some proper exploration of the city soon.

In the next Log, we will take on Route 22 and our first true Rival fight. Until the next time, we will see you!

Route 22
This Route is actually the Route to the Pokemon League, though we can't take advantage of it yet. For now, there is a grass patch. Being careful not to find ourselves on the actual path, we captured a Spearow and a Mankey, bringing our Pokemon Total up to 5.

We also captured another Spearow for a future Trade in Vermillion City. That one went into the Box.

From here, we trained up to Level 9, then took on Gary.

Vs. Gary
He opened with Pidgey (Level 9) and I opened with Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur dropped a Leech Seed (learned at Level 7), then I switched it out for Pidgey. The two Pidgey battled and I was the winner.

Next for Gary was Charmander (Level 9). Briefly I thought Charmander would have Ember (learned at Level 7), but no. That seems odd. Anyway, I had Bulbasaur set up a Leech Seed and then I switched to Ratatta. A Quick Attack (learned at Level 7) or two and Charmander was out, defeating Gary. He taunted me and left.

In the next Log, we will go onto Route 2 West. Until the next time, we will see you!

Viridian City
With no Poke Balls, I went back and healed after beating Gary. Here I did some shopping, getting some more Poke Balls, Potions, and an Antidote in preparation for my trek into Viridian Forest.

I also explored the City, meeting with an Old Man who taught me how to catch Pokemon. Did he not see I had 5 Poke Balls on my belt? For my trouble, I got the Teachy TV. Throwing the thing into my bag, I pressed on onto the western side of Route 2.

Route 2 West
In the grass of Route 2, I captured a Caterpie. After doing some research, I discovered that I could catch a Weedle here as well. Before I move on to Viridian Forest, I am going to get my Team up to Level 10. That will get Caterpie to Metapod (Level 7) and Butterfree (Level 10) as well as Weedle to Kakuna (Level 7) and Beedrill (Level 10). After that, they will both go into the Box. I know there are Pikachu in the Forest, and an open space to add one to the Team would be a good idea.

Current Team:
Bulbasaur
Pidgey
Rattata
Mankey
Spearow
Caterpie/Weedle

In the next Log, we will go into Viridian Forest. Until the next time, we will see you!

It took me a bit, but both Butterfree and Beedrill were boxed. With a Team of five, it was time to head into the Forest.

Viridian Forest
This place, typical of any forest, was crawling with Bug Types. Before I took many steps within the forest, I captured a low Level Pikachu (took 3 Balls to catch it), then trained up outside the Forest to get my mouse to Level 10.

Once I was ready, I took on Viridian Forest. I battled the Bug Catchers here, with most of my Team getting to Level 11. I then trained the rest of my Pokemon on wild Pokemon, making sure they were all at the same Level. Training done, I continued on to Pewter City.

Pewter City
Didn't do anything here yet except heal. I will not be exploring Pewter City until my Pokemon are Level 14, same as Brock.

Current Team
Bulbasaur
Pikachu
Mankey
Pidgey
Spearow
Rattata

In the next Log, we will explore Pewter City, then get ready to face Brock for our first Gym Badge. Until the next time, we will see you!

Pewter City
Tired of training in Viridian Forest, and with my Team at Level 13, I decided to explore the city. I checked out the Pewter Museum, which cost me $50 to enter. I guess this is how the Pewter City economy works...

After that, I got ready to face Brock for my first Gym Badge.

Preparing For Brock
I know Brock is a Rock Type Gym Leader. I can only use two Pokemon, to have a fair fight. I selected Bulbasaur and Mankey to be my two members. In the next Log, we will take on the Pewter Gym. Until the next time, we will see you!

With my duo ready, I was led by Brock's city guard buddy to the Gym. It's time to take Brock on!

Pewter Gym
First, I took on his trainer buddy. I opened with Bulbasaur to take out his Geodude. When he sent out Sandshrew, I switched to Mankey. Two attacks and Sandshrew was out.

I left the Gym to heal up, then came back to fight Brock.

Vs. Brock
He opened with Geodude (Level 12) and I opened with Mankey, wanting to save Bulbasaur for Onix. Two Karate Chops and Geodude was out.

Next for Brock was the big rock snake, Onix (Level 14). Onix was a lot trickier than I expected for Bulbasaur. It avoided a Leech Seed, then set up a Bind. Knowing I had a limited clock, I set up another Leech Seed, which thankfully hit. Onix kept Binding, though I expected a Rock Tomb. Bulbasaur struck with a Vine Whip, ending Onix and giving me the win. I now had my 1st Badge!

Upon leaving the Gym, I collected the rest of my Team (which I had boxed), then made my way to the Route 3 exit. Some scientist was standing there. In the next Log, we will see what is going on, then head out onto Route 3. Until the next time, we will see you!

Pewter City
Turns out, the scientist was one of Professor Oak's aides. They were there on a request from Mom to give me the Running Shoes. Finally! Now I can run! I thought about shopping to get some Poke Balls (I didn't have any on me), but then I thought about beating all of the trainers first on Route 3, then going back to do some shopping.

Route 3
There were 8 Trainers on the Route, giving my Team quite a bit of experience. Most of them got to Level 14. I went back to Pewter City, did some shopping, then prepared to capture some new Pokemon.

On Route 3, I found both Male and Female Nidoran as well as Jigglypuff. Making my way to the Poke Center near Mt. Moon, I rested. There is a curious person here, and I will be checking him out. Until the next time, we will see you!

Mt. Moon Pokemon Center
Turns out, the curious man in the Pokemon Center is a man selling Magikarp for $500. I bought one, which promptly went to my box. It's Level 5, which means I will have to train it for a while.

I will be training for Mt. Moon for a bit. My new captures are lower than the rest of my Pokemon. Nidoran Male is Level 7, Nidoran Female is Level 6, Jigglypuff is Level 3, and Magikarp is Level 5. I will go into Mt. Moon when the new captures are up with the rest.

Current Team
Nidoran M.
Nidoran F.
Jigglypuff
Magikarp

Until the next time, we will see you!

With my new captures at Level 14 (Magikarp was Level 13), I established a Team to tackle the mountain.

Bulbasaur
Pikachu
Mankey
Nidoran M
Nidoran F
Magikarp

Mt. Moon
While inside the Mountain, I battled a few trainers, captured a few Pokemon (I had Poke Balls from a prepared Shopping run). I captured Geodude, Zubat, Paras, and even a Clefairy. I also managed to get the two Moon Stones available here.

There were a few members of a group that called themselves Team Rocket. Why would they be interested in a Mountain? Selling Moon rocks? As I prepared to leave, I ran into a person of a different sort. Some kind of nerd...

In the next Log, we will see what this nerd has to say. Until the next time, we will see you!

Mt. Moon
Within Mt. Moon, a nerd offered me the choice between two fossils. After thinking about it, I picked up the Helix Fossil. No clue what it is. While I battled the Nerd, Nidoran M became Nidorino. That was a bit of a brutal fight, since I had no super effective Pokemon for his Grimer.

With the choice done, I left Mt. Moon. In the next Log, we will cross through Route 4 on the way to Cerulean City. Until the next time, we will see you!

Route 4
Not much happened here. I ignored the offers of some karate bros., then captured an Ekans. With that completed, I made my way into Cerulean City.

Cerulean City
I am not doing anything here right now other than healing up and changing out my Team. While in the grass, I got my Bulbasaur to Ivysaur and my Magikarp was Level 15, meaning it could actually attack.

With my new captures in the box, I decided to make a Team to train them up.

Current Team
Geodude
Clefairy
Zubat
Paras
Ekans

The plan is to get them up to Level 15, then get the entire trainable box to Level 18 before I move on. In the next Log, we will explore Cerulean City. Until the next time, we will see you!
