On April 2nd, the Singen customs office issued a statement regarding an incident at the Germany-Switzerland border that took place last week. A 33-year-old Swiss man attempted to smuggle 900 boxes of Pokémon Trading Card Game cards, worth €6,900 (approximately $USD 7,950), into Germany through the Bühl border checkpoint. While the border between Switzerland and Germany is open because both countries are part of the Schengen Area, customs checks still take place because Switzerland is not part of the European Union.

The Swiss man claimed he wanted to sell the boxes of cards to collectors in Germany, however he failed to declare these at customs, having denied having anything to declare during customs checks. The boxes had been concealed in his car's trunk in several boxes and crates. The man was required to immediately pay import duties amounting to €1,500 (about $USD 1,730), after which he was let go. His case is not yet over however, as customs authorities have also started criminal tax proceedings against him.
